Pre-Med begins before college...
According to the National Medical Association, "African Americans comprise 13% of Americans but only 4% of U.S. physicians... Major barriers to becoming a physician cited by students included financial constraints, lack of knowledge about medicine, little/no encouragement at home or in school, negative peer views on excelling academically, lack of African-American role models in the community and on TV, racism in medicine, and easier and more appealing alternatives for making money." Camp Honeycomb will provide students an opportunity to learn about medicine directly from minority doctors in a fun and interactive format.
Closing the Equity Gap with Education
As of 2019, Black Americans held one-sixth of the income held by white Americans and earned 50 cents less than every dollar earned by white Americans, on average. Efforts to close the wealth gap between white and Black Americans have not only stalled over the past few decades, but new data indicate the gap is worsening . In 2020, the wealth gap was virtually identical to that seen in 1950. Beginning financial literacy early is fundamental to empowering future generations to build significant wealth. Camp Honeycomb will teach students the importance of money management, saving and investing through a fun & engaging entrepreneurial exercise.
